A save-the-date magnet needs to answer three questions: who is getting married, when, and where (at least the city or region). Everything else is optional.

When to send,
based on your wedding type.
Guests need time to book flights and accommodations. The earlier the better. 12 months out is not too early for a destination wedding abroad.
Standard timeline. 4 months gives guests time to clear calendars and plan travel if they're coming from out of town.
Summer and fall weddings are dense on most guests' calendars. Sending earlier improves your odds of getting the date blocked off before conflicts arise.
Which photo works best
Engagement shoot photos are the most common choice. A portrait with good light and a clear view of both faces reads well at 2.5-3 inches.

Go 2.5" or 3"
For a save-the-date that carries text or faces, the 2.5x2.5 or 3x3 inch size is the most readable. The 2x2 is fine for a bold graphic, but smaller sizes can make text hard to read.
The 2.5x2.5 is the sweet spot: it fits comfortably in an envelope, displays well on a fridge, and costs less per unit than the 3x3.
One per household
Count households, not heads. A couple, a family of four, and a single person each get one magnet. If your guest list is 120 people across 65 households, order 70-75 magnets (the extras cover late additions and keepsakes for yourselves and your parents).

How the price compares to printed save-the-date cards
A printed save-the-date card from a stationery service typically runs $2-4 per card before postage. A 2.5x2.5 magnet from our 50-pack is $2.36 per magnet.
Cards and magnets cost roughly the same. The difference is what guests do with them. A card gets glanced at once and set aside. A magnet goes on the fridge and your wedding date stays visible until the day itself.
If you're already sending a formal invitation (which most couples do), using a magnet as the save-the-date means the only piece of paper in your stationery suite is the invitation itself.

Can I put custom text on a save-the-date magnet?
Our standard product is a photo magnet, so the image itself carries your message. Many couples use an engagement photo with their date and names visible in the image, or overlay simple text using free tools like Canva before uploading. We print exactly what you upload.
What photo resolution do I need for a save-the-date magnet?
For a 2.5x2.5 or 3x3 inch magnet, any photo taken on a smartphone in the last several years will work. We recommend at least 1000x1000 pixels for the best result. Our upload tool will warn you if the image resolution is too low.
How far in advance should I order save-the-date magnets?
We prepare orders for shipment, so you have a lot of flexibility. That said, for destination weddings you typically want to send save-the-dates 9-12 months out, and for local weddings 4-6 months is the standard. Give yourself at least a week after ordering to allow for shipping and any addressing.
Can save-the-date magnets be mailed directly?
Yes, magnets can be mailed in a standard envelope. Many couples add a small piece of cardboard or stiff backing to prevent bending in transit. A magnet in a padded envelope can also be mailed as a small flat package. Check with your post office if you plan to mail a large quantity.
How many save-the-date magnets should I order?
Order one per household, not one per guest. A couple living together gets one magnet. Add 10-15% extra for last-minute additions to your list and a few keepsakes for yourselves. For a 120-guest wedding with roughly 60 households, a 50-pack plus a small extra order covers you.
Are the sizes readable as a save-the-date?
Yes. The 2.5x2.5 and 3x3 inch sizes are the most readable when the magnet carries information like names and a date. If the text is part of your photo, make sure it is large enough in the image to be legible at that print size. Our preview tool shows you how it will look before you order.
